What is Battle of the Books?
"America's Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in grades 3rd-12th. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are similar in style to the TV series Family Feud or Whiz Kids styles of competition, however, the structure and format of the competitions may vary depending on the needs, resources, and personal preferences at various school sites or at county/state competitions." - America's Battle of the Books Official Website
How does Battle of the Books Work?
First, students in Ms. Burke, Mr. Whittaker and Mr. Tedino's classes will be combined to form 16 teams and students in Miss Killian, Ms. Burke, and Mrs. Faria's classes will also be combined to form 16 teams to represent the East Division. Students in Miss Reilly, Ms. Reynolds, and Mrs. Toman's classes will be combined to form 16 teams and students in Mr. Cassarino, Mr. Tibbetts and Mrs. Cabral's classes will also be combined to form 16 teams to represent the West Division.
Then, each team will be a given a team number, create a team name and will come up with a "game plan" for how many books and which titles each team member will read from the official book list during each "round." Throughout the next few months of training each team member MUST submit to the Book Log when they finish reading their books.
Each month we will meet for official group practice sessions. This time will be used for teams to check-in with each other, assign new books to read, and check out the website to see how other groups are doing.
At the end of "training" the 32 Teams from the East Division and the 32 Teams from the West Division will compete in their first battle. During this battle they will be asked questions about a variety of the books from the official book list. The 16 East Teams and the 16 West Teams who correctly identify the most titles correctly will move on the second round.
This time, the 8 East Teams and the 8 West Teams will move on to the third round.
At the end of the in-class battles the two remaining teams from Burke/Whittaker/Tedino and the two remaining teams from Faria/Killian/Burke will go onto the East Division Semi-Finals Battle! Likewise, the two remaining teams from Reilly/Reynolds/Toman and the two remaining teams from Tibbetts/Cassarino/Cabral will go to the West Division Semi-Finals Battle!
The Championship Battle (East vs. West Winners) will take place in the cafeteria in front of all Battle of the Books participants and any other spectators wanting to watch the exciting event. During this "live battle" groups will answer questions about the books they've read until only one team remains!
